Brown Rice Is the Same Grain With One Milling Step Left Out
Husk Off, Bran On, and the Germ Still There
Every grain of rice starts inside a husk. Take the husk off and you have brown rice: the bran layer and the germ are both still on the grain, which is what makes it tan rather than white and what gives it the firmer bite and the nuttier taste. Take the bran and the germ off as well and you have white rice. It is the same paddy either way, and the difference between the two is one machine.
That single step is why brown rice is quoted, shipped and cooked differently. It carries more of its own oil, it takes longer in the pot and more water with it, and it does not look uniform in the sack the way polished rice does, because there is no polisher smoothing the surface of every grain. A buyer who has only ever handled white rice opens his first sack of brown and thinks something is wrong with it. Nothing is.
Brown rice is not a variety. It is a form, and almost any variety can be sold in it — which is why this page carries six of them rather than one. A brown basmati rice and a brown long grain non-basmati rice are as different from each other as their white versions are, and they sell to different buyers at different prices. The table below sets the six side by side.
Shelf life is the one thing to plan around, and we would rather say it than have you find it out. The oil in the bran is what ages, so brown rice keeps for roughly six to twelve months against eighteen to twenty-four for milled white, and heat shortens it. That is exactly why we do not sit on it. Brown is husked against a mill run rather than held in a warehouse through a Gulf summer, so the clock starts when your container is loaded rather than months earlier.

1121 Brown Basmati Rice
The longest brown grain Pakistan mills, at 8.3mm, carrying the full 1121 aroma with the bran still on it. It goes to wholegrain retail shelves in the UK and Europe, where the bag has to look as premium as the shelf price says.
Super Brown Rice (Super Kernel Brown Basmati)
Super Kernel basmati with only the husk taken off, sold across the trade as Super Brown. This is the one European mills buy by the container to mill themselves, and the only one of the six that enters the EU as husked basmati.
D-98 Brown Basmati Rice
D-98 is Sindhi basmati at 6.8mm with the bran left on, mild rather than heavy in aroma. It is the brown basmati rice that fits an own-brand bag priced under the premium shelf without dropping out of the basmati family altogether.
KS-282 Brown Rice
KS-282 is a Punjab-grown Long Grain Non-Basmati Rice at 6.7mm, husked and colour sortexed, with no aroma to carry into the dish. Health-line manufacturers and caterers take it where the wholegrain matters and the fragrance does not.
IRRI-9 Brown Rice
IRRI-9 is a slender Long Grain Non-Basmati Rice at 6.8mm with the bran intact, husked against a mill run in Sindh. It is the brown food manufacturers buy when the grain has to be wholegrain, consistent and bought by the tonne.

All six brown rice varieties are supplied to the same envelope: no polish and no whitening of any kind, colour sortexed, moisture 14% maximum, broken 5% maximum, foreign matter 0.5% maximum, varietal purity 95% minimum, crop year stated on every batch, shelf life six to twelve months stored cool, dry and sealed, packed 5kg to 50kg with private label available. Tighter limits than these are routine and are quoted per variety — the broken percentage in particular is set by what you are doing with the rice, and a repacker filling retail bags and a mill buying feedstock do not need the same number. Grain length is the figure buyers ask for first and it is rarely the one that decides the order. A brown basmati rice and a brown long grain rice half a millimetre apart on paper cook differently, price differently and sell to different shelves. If you want the same wholegrain argument in a parboiled grain rather than a raw one, that is brown sella rice, and it is a different product with a different shelf life.

Brown rice is judged on what was never taken off it, which means there is nowhere for a poor lot to hide. Every consignment ships against a certificate of analysis and, where the destination requires one, a certificate of conformity issued before the vessel sails.
Four figures matter most on brown rice, and they are the four we hold the mills to:
95% Pure Variety
One variety in the sack. A brown basmati rice blended with a cheaper brown long grain rice looks almost identical in the bag and cooks nothing like it, and the buyer finds out in the pot.
14% Maximum Moisture
Moisture is the figure brown rice lives or dies on, because the bran carries its own oil. Loaded wet, a container of brown rice reaching Lagos or Antwerp arrives smelling of it.
5% Maximum Broken
Broken grain in a wholegrain rice retail bag is the first thing a shelf buyer sees. Tighter grades are quoted where the bag is printed and the shelf it sits on is premium.
0.5% Foreign Matter
Husk fragments, stones and stalk all survive hulling, and none survive a proper intake screen. What reaches your line should be brown rice and nothing else at all.
Sortex Is Where a Cheap Sack of Brown Rice Gives Itself Away
On white rice the polisher takes a thin layer off every grain and a fair amount of discolouration goes with it. Brown rice has no polisher. Whatever colour is on the grain when it leaves the huller is the colour that arrives in your warehouse, which is why an optical colour sorter matters more on a brown consignment than on a white one. The sorter runs the grain past a camera array in a falling curtain and blows out the dark grains, the red-striped grains, the immature green ones and any husk fragment or stone the aspirator missed. On brown the machine has to be reset before it starts, because it is now looking for a shade darker than tan against a background that is already tan, rather than a shade darker than white against white. That reset is the whole difference between a sack that reads as wholegrain rice and a sack that reads as dirty rice, and it is the first thing a European miller checks on a sample.
Every consignment of TEFT Global brown rice is colour sortexed and then sampled again after the sorter, and the reading goes on the certificate of analysis that travels with the container. We keep a sealed reference sample of the same lot, so anything disputed later is settled against the rice that actually shipped rather than against memory. Moisture is read twice, at intake and again at loading, because on brown it is the figure that decides whether the consignment holds. The Paperwork Your Port Will Ask For
Brown rice crosses the same borders as white rice and the same paperwork decides whether it clears them. Kenya and Tanzania want a certificate of conformity issued before the vessel sails. Nigeria and Ghana run their own pre-shipment verification. The European Union and the United Kingdom test against maximum residue limits and will hold a container at the quay while a laboratory works through it. None of it can be fixed after sailing: a conformity certificate issued at the destination is worth nothing, and a container waiting on a quay earns nothing while it waits. We arrange the inspection and the certificate for the market you are shipping into, we tell you which one applies before you commit rather than after, and the cost sits inside the quoted price instead of arriving later as an extra.
Independent Inspection at the Loading Port
You do not have to take our word for any of it. Independent pre-shipment inspection is available at the loading port through SGS, Cotecna, Intertek or Bureau Veritas, appointed by you and reporting to you rather than to us, on quality, quantity and weight. Most buyers do it on the first container and then stop, because by then they have seen how the grain is graded and what the certificate is worth. It stays available on every shipment after that, and on a first order of brown rice we would rather you used it. The inspector draws the sample at the loading port before the container doors close, so anything he finds is found while it can still be put right rather than after a vessel has sailed.
The Documents That Travel With the Container
Every container ships with a commercial invoice, a packing list, a bill of lading, a certificate of origin, a phytosanitary certificate and a fumigation certificate, alongside the certificate of analysis carrying the figures above. Where the destination requires it, the pre-export conformity certificate travels with them. Our supplying mills operate under HACCP, ISO 22000, ISO 9001, FSSC 22000, GMP, Halal and Kosher certification and are registered with the United States Food and Drug Administration.
All of our supplying mills operate under the oversight of the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) and comply with Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) requirements. If one of those documents is missing the container does not move, which is the reason for listing them by name: a buyer who has been held at a port before knows exactly which line is the one that stops him, and on rice it is almost always the phytosanitary certificate. We prepare the full set before the vessel sails and send you scanned copies on the day of loading, so nothing is travelling by courier while your container is standing on a quay.
